At-Home vs. AFOI Visitor Center Video Visits: Which VADOC Option Fits Your Situation?

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) offers video visitation through Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI). You can choose between two options: At-home Video Visitation or visits at an AFOI Visitor Center.

At-home Video Visitation lets you connect from your own space. You'll need a home computer, tablet, or Android smartphone to use this option.

The AFOI Visitor Center option works for people who can't do video visits from home. You use equipment at the center instead of your own, so you can still participate in video visitation.

Who Is Each for

• ✓ You need a compatible device for At-home Video Visitation: a home computer, tablet, or Android smartphone.
• ✓ Plan to be early on the day of the visit. Home internet video visitation visitors must be logged into the GTL system 15 minutes before the visit starts.

• ✓ This option is for people who do not have the necessary technology at home.
• ✓ It can also be a fallback if you do not qualify for At-home Video Visitation (you may be able to use an AFOI Visitor Center instead).
• ✓ Give yourself extra time. AFOI Visitor Center visitors must arrive at the Visitor Center at least 20 minutes before the scheduled visit.

Ask yourself two questions: Do you have a home computer, tablet, or Android smartphone? And do you qualify for At-home Video Visitation? If you have the tech and qualify, at-home visits are the simpler choice. If you don't have the right device or don't qualify, the AFOI Visitor Center option is probably a better fit.

1. Choose your visit type and get set up: pick At-home Video Visitation or an AFOI Visitor Center visit, then complete whatever registration and scheduling steps apply for that option.
2. Follow the timing rule for your option: for at-home visits, be logged into the GTL system 15 minutes before the visit starts. For AFOI Visitor Center visits, arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled visit.
