How to Send Money to a VADOC Inmate: Fastest Methods and Important Warnings

Trying to put money on a Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) account? The method you choose matters. Some options are fast. Others will be rejected outright.

Before you send anything, get the person's 7-digit VADOC Inmate ID Number. VADOC uses that number to route deposits to the right account. Enter it wrong (or leave it out), and you'll create delays.

Note: VADOC recommends reviewing Operating Procedure 802.2 before sending money. Funds sent in violation of the procedure can delay both the deposit and any refunds.

The fastest option is an online payment through JPay using a credit or debit card. If you need funds to hit the account quickly for commissary, go online.

Can't complete the deposit online? JPay also takes payments by phone and through their mobile app. Whichever option you choose, have the inmate's 7-digit ID ready so the deposit posts to the correct person.

Warning: Do not mail money (including cash and checks) to VADOC facilities or VADOC headquarters. Those items will be rejected.

Sending a money order? It goes to JPay, not the prison. Mail the money order with a deposit slip to: JPay, P.O. Box 278170, Miramar, FL 33027.

Plan for mailing time. Once JPay receives the money order, funds will be available within three business days.

Timing tip: Money orders aren't instant. The three-business-day clock starts after JPay receives the money order, not the day you mail it.

  • Have the inmate’s 7-digit Inmate ID Number before you start
  • Do not mail cash or checks to VADOC facilities or headquarters (they will be rejected)
  • If you use a money order, include a deposit slip and mail it to JPay at P.O. Box 278170, Miramar, FL 33027
