5 Things to Know Before Your First VADOC Video Visit (login, dress, who can join, and what can end the visit)

Your first VADOC video visit goes smoother when you treat it like an appointment with strict rules. These five basics cover timing, who can be on camera, what to wear, and what can end the visit or cost you future visits.

For home internet video visits, don't wait until the start time to sign in. Log into the GTL system 15 minutes before your scheduled visit. This gives you time to get connected and be ready when the session opens.

Using an AFOI Visitor Center? Plan your travel like you would for an in-person appointment. You need to arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled visit time.

No late cushion, no refund: Video visits run for the exact time slots scheduled. Fees are not refunded for late arrivals or missed visits.

Keep your group small. Only five people total can participate in a video visit at any time, including children. If you have more than five, you'll need to rotate people out before the visit starts rather than having everyone on at once.

If minors will be present, make sure the right adult is there too. At least one visitor must be 18 or older, and that adult must be the parent or legal guardian of any minor visitors participating.

Adults need ID to participate. All visitors who are 18 or older must present a valid, government-issued photo ID for video visitation.

Dress Code and Appearance

  • Wear clothing that covers from the neck to the kneecaps
  • Wear underwear

Visiting from a video visitation center (such as an AFOI Visitor Center)? There's an extra expectation about attire: visitors must wear outer garments and undergarments appropriate for their gender.

  1. Plan for an automatic end if a restroom break is needed. If the inmate must use the restroom during the video visit, the visit will be terminated.
  2. Treat the visit like it is being monitored and enforce the rules in your own space. Both the inmate and the visitor are responsible for inappropriate behavior during a video visit, and both can be suspended from video visitation because of it.

Suspension length: Video visitation privileges will be suspended for 6 months for violations.

Some problems carry bigger consequences than a temporary suspension. Certain violations can lead to enhanced sanctions, including a permanent ban from the video visitation system.
