What Happens After You Submit Your Visitation Application (Keen Mountain visitors)

Submitting the online application is just the first step - you can't visit Keen Mountain until you're approved. This goes for everyone. Adults and minors alike need an online visitor application on file, and the Central Visitation Unit must approve it before facility staff will let you in.

• ✓ VCIN background checks for visitors age 15 and older
• ✓ A check to see if a visitor is currently suspended
• ✓ A VACORIS database check
• ✓ For minors: the minor’s application must be attached to an adult application, and the minor must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an approved accompanying adult during visits

Expect about 45 days for Virginia residents and around 90 days if you're applying from out of state. Some applications take longer, so don't panic if you don't hear back right away - especially if you live outside Virginia.

You should get an email confirming the system received your application. That confirmation means it went through.

1. Watch your email for status updates - approval and denial updates are sent to the email address you put on your application.
2. If you’re approved, schedule your visit online - you’ll use the Visitation Scheduler to pick an available date and time, and you can schedule up to 14 days in advance.
3. Plan around the weekend limit - approved visitors are permitted a maximum of one visit per weekend.

Your approval doesn't last forever. Visitor applications expire three years after the approval date, so you'll need to submit a new one to keep visiting after that.
