What You Need to Know About Phone Calls from a VADOC Inmate (recording, time limits, approved numbers, and funding)
VADOC inmate calls follow a few rules that catch families off guard: the phone system runs through ConnectNetwork (GTL), most calls are recorded, there's a 20-minute limit, inmates can only dial numbers on an approved list, and funding usually happens through prepaid accounts.
VADOC facilities use ConnectNetwork by Global Tel*Link (GTL) for all inmate phone calls. This is the system your loved one uses to call out, and it's also where you'll set up funding if you want to help cover call costs.
Recorded calls: VADOC inmate phone calls are recorded and monitored. The exception is properly verified attorney calls.
Calls are capped at 20 minutes. This limit exists to give everyone fair access to the phones.
Inmates can only call numbers on their approved list, which can include both landlines and cell phones. In VADOC, the inmate maintains this list themselves, and it maxes out at 15 numbers. If they want to add someone new, they may need to remove an existing number first.
If calls keep getting cut short because of cost, setting up funding solves the problem. You can set up an AdvancePay (prepaid) phone account to receive collect calls, or deposit money directly through ConnectNetwork (GTL).
- Decide how you want to fund calls - use ConnectNetwork (GTL) to set up a prepaid/AdvancePay account or to make deposits.
- Set up your account or deposit with the right details - you will need the inmate’s seven-digit state ID number.
- Use the official vendor contact if you need help - you can use ConnectNetwork (GTL) or call GTL toll-free at 1-800-483-8314.
Tip: Have the inmate’s seven-digit state ID number ready before you start. For setup help, use ConnectNetwork (GTL) or call 1-800-483-8314.
