Before You Go: Complete Checklist for Visiting Kennebec County Jail
A smooth visit starts before you leave the house. This checklist covers Kennebec County Jail's basic entry rules—so you don't lose time or get turned away at the door.
Bring an accepted photo ID every time. Kennebec County Jail requires a valid passport, military ID, or state photo I.D. before each visit - they won't have it on file from last time. If you're visiting with someone else, make sure every adult has their own ID ready at check-in.
Dress code violations are one of the easiest ways to get turned away. Keep it simple and conservative. Kennebec County Jail requires clothing on both your upper and lower body - no bare tops or bare feet. They also prohibit halter-tops, tank tops, low cut tops, tube tops, bathing suits, and short skirts or shorts. Pick something that clearly meets coverage expectations before you leave home.
Plan your group size ahead of time. The visiting area has a firm capacity limit: two adults and two children under 18, max. If more people want to come, split into separate visits rather than trying to bring everyone at once.
Bringing a minor? Make sure the right adult is present. All visitors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian - unless the minor is emancipated with proper documentation. Not sure what counts as proper documentation? Get it sorted before you go, not in the lobby.
Heads up: Visitors and inmates can be searched before and/or after a visit, including being scanned by a metal detector.
Travel light. Kennebec County Jail doesn't allow any personal items in the visiting area - assume you'll leave everything behind before going in.
Give yourself extra time. All visits are one (1) hour long, and if you arrive late, the visit still ends at the originally scheduled time. Being late doesn't shift the hour - it just cuts into it.
