What to Expect During Your Loved One’s First 72 Hours at Kennebec County Jail
The first few days after an arrest move fast. It's natural to want answers immediately. At Kennebec County Jail, in-person visits aren't allowed during the first 72 hours—but your loved one does get two free local phone calls at intake and will appear before a judge through the facility's video arraignment system.
Kennebec County Jail doesn't allow visits during someone's first three days in custody. The policy is straightforward: "During the first seventy-two (72) hours of incarceration, family and friends will not be allowed to visit an inmate." If staff tell you to wait before scheduling a visit, this is why.
Those first 72 hours are when the jail handles intake - processing, settling in, and preparing for what comes next. Your loved one isn't completely cut off, though. Every person booked into custody receives two (2) free local phone calls to notify family of their location and arrange for legal help. If you're waiting to hear from them, those calls are often your earliest chance for a quick update and a starting point for lining up an attorney.
Your loved one will also have a first court appearance early in the process. At Kennebec County Jail, all new arrivals go before a judge through the video arraignment system - no transport to a courtroom required for that initial step.
Video arraignments start at 1:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If you're trying to plan around when something might happen, those are the days and times to know.
