How to Send Personal Mail to Someone at Kent County Jail (effective April 1, 2025)
If you mail letters the old-fashioned way to Kent County Jail, they'll get sent back. As of April 1, 2025, all personal mail has to go through Smart Communications, where it's scanned and delivered electronically.
As of April 1, 2025, Kent County Jail no longer accepts personal mail, books, or magazines sent directly to someone in custody. Send any of those items straight to the jail and they'll come right back to you. The safest bet: use the Smart Communications address and format every single time.
Legal mail: Legal mail is still accepted at the facility and should be sent directly to the jail, not to Smart Communications.
For personal mail (letters, postcards, greeting cards), address your envelope to Smart Communications using the facility's Smart Communications PO Box in Seminole, Florida. Make sure you include the inmate's full name and Booking/ID number so the mail gets matched to the right person's account.
- Address it to Smart Communications - Use “Smart Communications” as the main addressee.
- Add the inmate’s identifying line - Clearly print the inmate’s full name and Booking/ID number exactly as the jail has it listed.
- Use the Smart Communications mailing address - PO Box 9216, Seminole, FL 33775-9195.
Reminder: If the inmate's full name or Booking/ID number is missing or hard to read, your mail may never reach the right account.
Smart Communications handles all incoming personal mail. They open it, scan it, and deliver an electronic version that the inmate can read on a facility-issued tablet. The paper letter itself is not handed over.
Once your letter reaches the Smart Communications processing center, it's typically available within 24 to 72 hours. Delivery happens through SmartInmate, the platform Smart Communications uses to provide scanned personal mail to inmates.
Tip: Build in some extra time. Your mail has to reach the processing center and get scanned before the inmate can read it.
Don't send books or magazines. Kent County Jail doesn't accept them, and they won't be processed through the personal mail system. Any books or magazines sent directly to the facility will be returned to the sender.
Warning: Skip books and magazines entirely. Kent County Jail does not accept them for inmates.
