Before your first visit to Kettle Moraine (complete checklist)

Your first visit to Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution (KMCI) goes much smoother when you handle approval first, bring the right ID, and know what to expect at the gatehouse. This checklist helps you avoid the most common reasons people get turned away at the door.

Before your first visit to Kettle Moraine (complete checklist)

Before you plan the drive, make sure you're actually cleared to visit. KMCI requires visitors to complete the Visitor Questionnaire (DOC-21AA) and be on the inmate's approved visiting list before scheduling any video or in-person visit. Haven't been approved yet? Take care of that first. You can show up prepared in every other way and still be denied entry without approval.

  • If you’re 16 or older, bring current picture ID.
  • Acceptable IDs include a valid state driver’s license, valid passport or visa, valid Department of Transportation (DOT) ID, valid military ID, or a valid tribal ID with a photo.
  • If you’re bringing anyone under 18, they must be accompanied by an adult who is on the approved visiting list and visiting the same inmate (unless the minor is the inmate’s legal spouse).

When you arrive at KMCI, head to the visitation building near the upper parking lot and wait until staff call you into the Gatehouse. Don't skip the paperwork - you must complete the Request to Visit Offender form in the visitation building before entering the Gatehouse. Park in the upper lot, in lined spaces only. Bringing kids? Plan your timing carefully. Minor children cannot be left unattended in a vehicle, so don't try to "hold your place" by leaving them in the car.

Everyone goes through a metal detector before entering. DOC employees and law enforcement officers are the only exceptions. You get three attempts to clear it - fail all three, and you're denied entry, no matter how far you've traveled. Make this easier on yourself: skip clothing with metal buckles, snaps, or buttons. The less metal you wear, the faster you'll get through.

Once you're in the Gatehouse, you'll find secured lockers at no charge - you keep the key. Staff will give you a hand stamp, and you must show it when you leave. Know the "don't bring it" rules before you leave home. No weapons, alcohol, or illegal drugs on state property. Smoking and tobacco products are also prohibited on state property. The visiting room has strict limits on what you can carry in. Allowed items include: one comb/pick/brush per visitor; up to two baby blankets per child; up to four diapers per child (no diaper bags); up to two plastic baby bottles per child; one hand-held baby seat per child; diaper wipes in a clear plastic bag; one pacifier per child; one coat and one pair of gloves per visitor; headwear that doesn't conceal your identity; one institution locker key; and necessary personal medication (inhalers, individual nitro pills - not bottles - and Epi pens). You may bring up to $25 per visitor to use during the visit. Money for inmates is not accepted during visits.
