KMCI visits have a few rules that trip people up—especially around physical contact, vending food, and what changes if your loved one is in RHU. Use the sections below as a quick checklist before you go.

Visiting Rules at KMCI: Physical Contact, Food, Children and RHU Visits

You can have a brief hug and kiss at the beginning and end of your visit. Keep it quick - a short greeting and goodbye, not ongoing contact during the visit.

  • No hand-holding
  • Visitors may not sit on an inmate’s lap

Don't share any food or drinks you buy with the inmate. Even a small gesture like offering a sip or a bite isn't allowed at KMCI.

Food has to be handled a specific way in the visiting room. Empty anything you buy onto the paper plates provided - you can't keep items in their original containers.

Bringing kids? Plan to supervise them the entire time. Staff won't step in if a child wanders or gets restless - that's on you.

KMCI also limits how many adults can be at a visit at one time. The maximum is six adult visitors, but minor children don’t count toward that six-adult limit.

RHU visits run on a tighter schedule. If the person you're visiting is in the Restrictive Housing Unit, the visit is limited to one hour.

The headcount is smaller for RHU, too - no more than three adult visitors.

Be careful with who you bring if children are involved. For RHU visits, any minor children who attend must be the inmate’s own child(ren).

Photos are allowed during visits. If getting a picture together matters to you, plan for it.

Note: The inmate must bring a completed disbursement to the visit. If you’re not sure what that means in practice, ask your loved one ahead of time so you don’t lose the chance for photos.
