What to Bring (and Leave Behind) for Your KMCI Visit: A Practical Checklist
KMCI is strict about what visitors can bring into the visiting room. Pack with their allowable items list in mind, and you'll breeze through the gatehouse instead of scrambling to sort things out.
Visiting with a baby or young child? Pack light and stick exactly to the limits. KMCI only allows a short list of baby items into the visiting room - anything extra (like a full diaper bag) can slow you down at screening or send you back to your car. Think "just enough for the visit": a couple of blankets, a small diaper count, and only the specific feeding and comfort items they allow. One detail that trips people up: wipes are allowed, but they must be in a clear plastic bag.
- ✓ Up to two (2) baby blankets for each child
- ✓ Up to four (4) diapers for each child (diaper bags are not allowed)
- ✓ Up to two (2) plastic baby bottles for each child
- ✓ One (1) hand-held baby seat for each child
- ✓ Diaper wipes (must be kept in a clear plastic bag)
- ✓ One (1) pacifier for each child
- ✓ One (1) comb, pick, or brush per visitor
For your own items, KMCI keeps it simple: you can bring in one coat and one pair of gloves per visitor. Headwear is allowed as long as it doesn’t conceal your identity, so choose something that won’t block your face. You’re also allowed one institution locker key - KMCI provides secured lockers in the gatehouse at no charge for anything you can’t take into the institution, and you keep the key with you while you visit.
Need personal medication during your visit? KMCI allows it, but you have to tell staff. This includes inhalers, EpiPens, and nitro pills - bring only individual pills, not a bottle. Let the gatehouse officer know when you arrive, and notify the visiting room officer as well. No surprises once you're inside.
Bring only what you need for the visit itself. KMCI caps spending money at $25 per visitor. Don't bring cash expecting to hand it to the person you're visiting - money for inmates isn't accepted during visits. Adding funds to their account has to be handled separately, outside the visit process.
