What Happens When You Arrive for a Visit at KMCI: A Step-by-Step Guide

Park in the upper parking lot and stick to the lined spaces. Head to the visitation building near that lot and wait there - staff will call you into the Gatehouse when it's your turn.

  • Don’t leave minor children unattended in a vehicle - law enforcement will be summoned.
  • Remove your keys and lock your vehicle while you’re on KMCI property.
  • Pets aren’t permitted on state property.

While you wait, grab a Request to Visit Offender form in the visitation building and fill it out. This is part of check-in, so take care of it right after you arrive.

Anyone 16 or older needs current picture ID to enter. Have it out and ready - you don't want to be digging through your wallet when staff asks for it.

  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Valid passport or visa
  • Valid Department of Transportation ID
  • Valid military ID
  • Valid tribal ID (with a photo)

Next up: metal detection. Everyone goes through except Department of Corrections employees and law enforcement officers. You get three attempts to clear it. If you can't pass after three tries, you won't be allowed in.

  1. Ask your physician to complete form DOC-2424 - this is the “Visitors Requesting Accommodation” verification for pacemakers or other medical implants that affect metal detectors.
  2. Have the form mailed or faxed to the KMCI Security Director - it must come from a physician.
  3. Send it at least one week before your initial visit - this gives time for entrance approval to be available at the Gatehouse.

Bringing items that aren't allowed inside? Secured lockers are available in the Gatehouse at no charge. You'll keep the key with you during your visit and grab your stuff on the way out.

Don't wash your hands: You'll get a hand stamp during check-in, and staff will check for it when you leave.
