Civil Process Fees & Fee Waivers at Kings County Sheriff's Office
Need the Kings County Sheriff's Civil Division to serve documents or handle other civil services? You'll need to pay fees up front. Here's a practical breakdown of common costs and when fee waivers apply.
By law, the Civil Division charges fees for most services, and payment is due before any work begins. Plan ahead so your paperwork arrives with the correct payment (or an eligible fee waiver) from the start.
Standard document service costs $50 per person served. Serving multiple people in the same matter? You'll pay $50 for each.
Serving a civil bench warrant costs $175. This is separate from general process service fees.
Evictions handled through a Writ of Possession cost $180. If you're working with an eviction timeline, factor this in early since fees are due before service begins.
Bank levies cost $50 per bank. Levying multiple banks? Your total depends on how many you include.
A vehicle levy for transfer of possession requires $2,000 up front: a $125 fee plus a $1,875 deposit. Be ready for a larger initial payment than standard service.
Real property levies require $3,000 up front (various fees plus a deposit). Plan for a significant initial cost when pursuing this type of levy.
A few other services have set fees: notary service is $15, a keeper (8 hours) is $300, and a till tap is $125.
The Civil Division accepts payment by cash, check, or money order. If you pay by check or money order, make it payable to “Kings County Sheriff’s Office”.
Some restraining order services are free. The Sheriff doesn't charge to serve domestic violence or elder abuse restraining orders. Civil harassment restraining order fees may also be waived, but only when the court orders it.
Have a court-ordered fee waiver? The Civil Division will accept it instead of charging a fee, provided two things match: the court case number on the waiver must match the documents being served, and the waiver must have been issued to the person requesting service.
Budgeting Checklist
- ✓ Confirm what type of civil service you are requesting, since fees are required up front for most services.
- ✓ Count the number of people (or banks) involved, because some fees are charged per person served or per bank.
- ✓ If you are using a court-ordered fee waiver, make sure the case number matches your documents and that the waiver is issued to the person requesting service.
