Before Your First Visit to Kyle Unit: The Checklist You Actually Need

Your first visit goes smoother when you confirm the basics before leaving home. Use this checklist to make sure you're approved, set up in the scheduler, and not driving to Kyle Unit on a day when visitation is canceled.

Before you make the drive, confirm the inmate is assigned to Kyle Unit and has visitation privileges. Call the unit for final confirmation before traveling. That one step can save you a wasted trip if something changed since you last checked.

Visits at Kyle Unit start with one basic requirement: you must be on the inmate's approved Visitors List. Each inmate can have a maximum of 10 names on that list. If you're not on it yet, someone may need to be removed before you can be added.

Keep timing in mind if you're trying to get added (or if the inmate needs to remove someone to make space). For institutional inmates, Visitors List changes are allowed once every six months. For state jail, ISF, and SAFP inmates, changes are allowed once every 60 days.

If you're using the online scheduler to request a relationship, that request goes to the inmate's unit of assignment. Staff verify the visitor and inmate relationship, and your request stays pending until approved. Because approval and unit assignment matter, confirm the inmate is assigned to Kyle Unit, has visitation privileges, and call the unit before you travel.

If you plan to use the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, you need to create your own account. TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you. Handle this ahead of time rather than trying to fix it on visit day.

  1. Submit your email address: Start account creation by entering a valid email address.
  2. Find the validation email: You will receive an email with a 7-digit validation code (and a link) used to complete registration.
  3. Enter the 7-digit code to finish: Use that validation code to complete your account registration so you can move forward with scheduling.

Warning: When entering your phone number in the scheduler, use the XXX XXX XXXX format with spaces. Do not use dashes.

If you're 18 or older, bring a current, official government-issued photo ID. At least one ID must show a current physical address. An exception may be made for victims of family violence who have been certified by the attorney general to have address protection.

Kyle Unit visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Plan your travel around those hours, especially if you're coming from out of town.

A regular visiting period is two hours. The clock starts when both the inmate and visitor(s) are present, so your actual time together depends on when each of you gets checked in.

Note: Unit-wide visitation cancellations are posted on the TDCJ homepage. Check for cancellations and call the unit before you travel. Even eligible inmates cannot receive visitors if visitation is canceled.

Keep your visit-day prep simple. Focus on the parts only you can do: create your TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account if needed (staff cannot create it for you), and have your current government-issued photo ID ready for check-in.

If Something Goes Wrong Contacts Next Steps

  • Call Kyle Unit before you travel to confirm the inmate is assigned there and has visitation privileges.
  • If your relationship request is still pending in the scheduler, remember it was sent to the inmate’s unit for verification and stays pending until approved.
  • If the scheduler tells you to call the unit or you are not approved for visits, contact the unit to confirm your status before making the trip.
  • If you are stuck at the account stage, create and manage your own scheduler account. TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you.
