The First Three Days: What You Can Drop Off Right After Someone's Booked at Lamar County Jail
The first few days after booking are the only time Lamar County Jail lets you drop off certain items directly. Here's what you can bring, how after-hours drop-offs work for new bookings, and what changes once that three-day window closes.
Within three days of booking at Lamar County Jail, you can drop off "whites" (work linens). It's a narrow window - one of the few items the jail lets you bring in person right away.
Prescription glasses are also allowed during that same three-day window. If they need glasses to read forms or see clearly, getting them in early can make a real difference.
Bibles can be dropped off within three days of booking too. If faith materials matter to your loved one, bring them early - after the three-day mark, the process changes.
Once three days have passed since booking, you can't just show up whenever. Property for someone booked more than three days is only accepted on Mondays during business hours. Drop something off outside that window? It gets discarded. Make sure you're within the allowed timeframe before making the trip.
One common surprise: books can’t be dropped off at all. If you want to send reading material, it has to be mailed in rather than delivered as a property drop-off.
- ✓ Legal mail, religious mail, and mailed items: Address to Inmate Name / ID Number, P.O. Box 806, Purvis, MS 39475.
- ✓ All other mail: Address to JailATM.com – Lamar County Jail, Inmate Name / ID Number, 384 Goodman Road E. Box 217, Southaven, MS 38671 (this mail is scanned to the individual’s kiosk account for electronic viewing).
- ✓ Don’t skip identifiers: If mailed-in property doesn’t include a proper return address or doesn’t clearly identify who sent it, it won’t be issued and will be discarded.
For newly booked inmates (less than three days), Lamar County Jail does allow property drop-offs after hours or on weekends - you'll handle it through booking using the lobby phone. This option only applies during that first three-day period, so timing matters.
- Go to the lobby on the right side of the Sheriff’s Office - that’s where the after-hours drop-off process starts.
- Use the phone in the lobby - it’s provided for contacting staff.
- Press the side button labeled “Booking” - this connects you to booking so you can let them know you’re there to drop off property for a newly booked inmate.
Paperwork is required. You'll need a completed form signed by the inmate before property can be accepted. Drop items off without the form - or with an incomplete one - and they'll be discarded.
Packaging matters too. Everything dropped off or mailed in must be in its original packaging. Anything damaged, torn, or ripped may be discarded instead of issued.
Heads up: Non-allowed items (or items in excess) may be discarded because the facility can’t pay return shipping or store them. Mail that doesn’t clearly identify the sender or include a proper return address can also be discarded.
Not sure if something is allowed? Call the Canteen/Property Officer at 601-794-3562 before you come.
Property drop-off hours are Monday–Thursday 8:00 AM–4:30 PM and Friday 8:00 AM–4:00 PM. The office is closed weekends.
