What You Can (and Can't) Bring to Visits at Lancaster County Prison
Visiting someone at Lancaster County Prison goes a lot smoother when you show up with the right ID, the right clothing, and as little extra as possible. Use this checklist to avoid delays—or getting turned away at the door.
Bring a current, government-issued photo ID. Here's the catch: Lancaster County Prison checks that your ID address matches what's on the inmate's visitation list. If you've moved recently or your address isn't current, don't assume any ID will work - update it first.
Lobby Lockers and Personal Items
- ✓ Plan to leave most personal items in your car - anything considered unauthorized (like a purse, backpack, or cell phone) can’t go into the visit.
- ✓ If you bring unauthorized items anyway, use the lobby lockers: $0.50 per locker, and they take quarters only.
- ✓ Bring at least a couple of quarters so you’re not stuck figuring it out at check-in.
Note: Lancaster County Prison isn’t responsible for damage to - or loss of - personal items or money you place in the lobby lockers.
Everyone clears the metal detector to visit - no exceptions. You get two tries. Fail both, and you won't get in. Set yourself up for success by minimizing metal on your body and in your clothing before you arrive.
- Bring documentation for any implant or medical device - Lancaster County Prison requires supporting documentation at check-in.
- Tell staff before screening becomes a problem - if you know a device may affect the metal detector, present your documentation during check-in so you don’t lose time (or your visit) trying to clear screening.
Dress modestly - clothing should keep commonly private body areas covered. Footwear is required, so don't show up in socks or barefoot. If you wear a bra, Lancaster County Prison requires that it be worn. Just know that underwire bras can trip the metal detector and slow things down at the entrance.
- ✓ Don’t wear shirts with alcohol- or drug-related logos.
- ✓ Keep jewelry simple - anything you wear has to clear the metal detector.
- ✓ Avoid safety pins, decorative pins, and metal-heavy hair accessories that can trigger screening issues.
Note: Visitation officers monitor attire, and if you don’t follow the guidelines, your visitation can be revoked.
