Metal Detector Rules and What to Wear for Visitation at Lancaster County Prison

Every visitor at Lancaster County Prison must pass through a metal detector before seeing anyone. You get two chances to clear it - no exceptions. What you wear and what's on your body can be the difference between getting in and getting turned away.

A bra is required for visitation. Underwire bras can trigger the metal detector, so a non-underwire option is your safest bet for clearing screening without issues.

Have a medical device or implant? Bring your documentation and present it at check-in. This helps staff understand why you might alarm and can prevent delays - or a denied visit.

Tip: Bring documentation for any implant or medical device that could trigger the detector. And if possible, skip the underwire bra.

Small accessories can trip you up at the checkpoint. Jewelry, safety pins, decorative pins, hair clips - all of it has to clear the metal detector. Remove anything metal before you arrive, or at least before you step up to screening. Don't waste your two tries on a forgotten earring.

  • Rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings
  • Safety pins
  • Decorative pins (including on jackets, hats, or bags)
  • Hair accessories that contain metal (pins, clips, barrettes)
  • Underwire bras (may prevent you from clearing the detector)

Dress modestly. Lancaster County Prison expects visitors to keep private body areas covered, so aim for full coverage and skip anything revealing.

Shoes are required. Wear them from the start so you don't hit a snag at the door.

Prohibited: Shirts that contain alcohol- or drug-related logos are not allowed for visitation.
