Where Money Goes: Understanding the Two Separate Accounts for Lansing Residents
Sending money to someone at Lansing? Here's what you need to know: there are two separate accounts, and they don't work the same way.
Money sent to Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) residents at Lansing goes to one of two places, depending on what it's for. ViaPath funds go to the resident's tablet account - that's for electronic messaging, printing messages and photos, and buying entertainment content. Trust account deposits are a different system entirely. Those go through Access Corrections and cover commissary purchases and debit phone calls.
Viapath Uses
- ✓ Add funds electronically to the resident’s ViaPath tablet account (there’s no fee to add funds through ViaPath)
- ✓ Pay for electronic messages through the tablet system
- ✓ Cover printing of messages/photos
- ✓ Purchase entertainment content on the tablet
Tip: If your goal is tablet messaging or entertainment, using ViaPath to add tablet funds can save you money because there’s no fee to add funds through ViaPath.
The trust account handles most in-facility spending and runs through Access Corrections. If you want to help with commissary or debit phone purchases, deposit to the trust account through Access Corrections - ViaPath won't work for this. Here's where it gets confusing: commissary and debit phone options might appear as requests on the tablet, but they're processed separately and don't pull from ViaPath funds.
- Decide what you’re paying for - tablet messaging/printing/entertainment uses ViaPath funds; commissary and debit phone purchases use trust account funds.
- Use ViaPath for tablet money - add funds electronically to the resident’s tablet account when your goal is messages or entertainment (and remember: ViaPath add-funds has no fee).
- Use Access Corrections for trust deposits - if you’re trying to cover commissary or debit phone spending, deposit to the trust account through Access Corrections (ViaPath can’t be used for trust deposits).
- Double-check before you send - use the vendor’s support options in the system you’re using if you’re unsure which account a charge will pull from.
Before you deposit: Ask the resident which account they need funded. ViaPath tablet funds and Access Corrections trust funds are completely separate - money sent to the wrong account can't be used for what they actually need.
