What to Expect During the Search Process When You Arrive at Lawton Community Corrections Center
Your first few minutes at Lawton Community Corrections Center can feel intimidating if you don't know what's coming. Here's what the search process looks like, what staff can check, and what happens if you refuse.
When you visit Lawton Community Corrections Center, you’re expected to follow all Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) visitation rules. Staff use those rules to decide who can enter, what’s allowed on the property, and what steps you’ll go through before you’re permitted to visit.
Searches are standard. Staff conduct pat searches on both inmates and visitors before visitation begins - everyone entering the facility perimeter goes through at least this step. A pat search is a hands-on check over your clothing to make sure you're not bringing prohibited items into the secure area.
Anything you carry in can be searched. Bags, purses, boxes - staff will look through whatever you bring. Plan accordingly.
Searches don't stop at the door. Your vehicle and everything inside it can be inspected when you enter the facility grounds.
Warning: If you refuse to allow a search, you will be denied entry. Refusal can also lead to being denied future access to the facility.
Strip searches aren't routine for visitors. A visitor can only be strip-searched when the warden (or a designee) determines there's probable cause to believe that person has contraband. This requires a specific decision based on suspicion about you - not a blanket policy applied to everyone.
If a strip search is ordered, ODOC policy requires safeguards. Two trained staff members conduct the search, and they must be the same gender as the visitor.
Refuse a search or ignore instructions during screening, and staff will deny you entry. Under ODOC rules, refusal can also mean you lose future access to Lawton Community Corrections Center. Decide before you arrive whether you're comfortable with these requirements.
