Visitation

What to Expect During a Contact Visit at Leath Correctional Institution

A contact visit means you're not separated by plexiglass. It feels more normal, but it also comes with specific screening and on-site rules that can catch first-time visitors off guard.

Leath Correctional Institution allows contact visits, so you and your loved one sit in the same visiting area rather than speaking through a barrier. Because there's no plexiglass between you, expect closer supervision and stricter enforcement of the room's rules.

General population inmates with visitation privileges can receive up to four in-person visits per month. There's also a one-visit-per-weekend limit, and that weekend visit still counts toward the monthly four. Keep both limits in mind when planning so you don't show up for a weekend trip that can't be scheduled.

If you're 18 or older and entering a Level II or Level III institution, you'll go through a pat/frisk search on top of the standard screening procedures. Female visitors are always searched by female employees, so expect a female officer to handle your pat/frisk at check-in.

Heads up: If you're 18 or older, plan on a pat/frisk search as part of entry screening. Female visitors will always be searched by female employees.

During a two-hour visit, you get one trip to the visitation room restroom. Just one. Use the restroom before you enter the visiting area so you're not stuck choosing between that single trip and the rest of your visit.

If you have a child age nine or younger with you, the child must accompany you to the restroom. That trip counts as the one-time restroom use for both of you, so plan carefully before leaving your seat.

  • Bring a debit or credit card that is Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express (these are accepted at visitation vending machines).
  • Do not bring a prepaid debit card. Prepaid debit cards are not accepted and may not be brought into the institution.
  • Plan for one card for your whole visiting group. Only one debit/credit card may be brought in per visiting group.
  • Make sure the card has your name printed on it and that it matches your ID.

Avoid a vending problem: Only one card is allowed per visiting group, and the name on the card must match your ID. Prepaid debit cards won't work and should not be brought in.
