What Physical Contact Is Allowed During Contact Visits at Leblanc Unit

Contact visits at the Leblanc Unit allow some physical contact, but it's limited and closely monitored. Knowing the rules upfront - brief hugs and kisses only at specific times, hand-holding with hands visible on the table - helps you avoid corrections from staff or losing your visit altogether.

All visits at the Leblanc Unit may be electronically monitored, except for attorney-client meetings. Assume staff can see everything during your contact visit. That's why physical contact rules get enforced in real time - step outside what's allowed, and you'll hear about it immediately.

During contact visits at the Leblanc Unit, you can hug and kiss once at the beginning and once at the end. A quick hello, a quick goodbye - that's it.

Note: The allowed hugging and kissing is limited to one time at the start and one time at the end of the visit. Additional embraces or kissing during the visit can be treated as a rules violation.

Holding hands is allowed during contact visits, but your hands must stay on top of the table where staff can see them. Drop them below the tabletop or block the view, and you'll be told to stop.

  • Keep both hands on top of the table
  • Make sure your hands stay clearly visible to staff at all times
  • Avoid positioning your hands in a way that blocks staff’s view
  • Stop immediately if staff tells you to

Here's the simple version: one brief embrace and kiss at the start, one at the end, and hand-holding on top of the table where staff can see it. Outside of that, keep your hands to yourself. Since visits may be electronically monitored (attorney-client meetings excepted), act like everything you do is being observed. Unsure if a gesture is okay? Stick to visible, on-the-table hand-holding.

  1. Greet with one brief hug and kiss - Use the beginning of the visit for a quick hello embrace.
  2. If you hold hands, keep them on the tabletop - Hands must stay on top of the table in full view of staff.
  3. Skip extra physical contact during the visit - Save any further hugging or kissing for the end.
  4. Say goodbye with one brief hug and kiss - The second permitted embrace is at the end of the visit.
  5. Follow staff instructions right away - If staff corrects your hand placement or asks you to stop, comply immediately.

Tip: Not sure what's allowed? Ask staff before the visit starts. Attorney-client visits are the only ones exempt from electronic monitoring.
