Visiting Lee County Jail with Children: Age Rules and Visitor Limits

Bringing kids to a jail visit takes extra planning, especially when it comes to age rules and visitor limits. Here are the Lee County Jail policies that affect families most.

Anyone under 17 must be accompanied by a guardian to enter Lee County Jail. No exceptions. If you're planning to bring a child or teen, make sure a guardian is coming along, or the visit can be denied at the door.

Bring photo ID: Every visitor needs an acceptable photo ID to check in. Lee County Jail accepts a current driver's license with photo, a state-issued photo ID card, a military ID, or a passport. No ID, no visit.

Before any in-person visit, the inmate needs to designate up to five individuals on their visitor list. Children can be included, but they still count. Every child visiting must be one of the five people the inmate designates.

Even with a full list of five visitors, only three can come to a single visit. Lee County Jail counts infants and children toward that total. A baby in arms still takes up a visitor spot.

Example: An inmate can list up to five people total, but only three of those designated visitors (including kids and infants) can come in for any one visit.

Practical Tips

  • If you’re bringing anyone under 17, make sure a guardian is coming with them.
  • Bring acceptable photo ID for every visitor (current photo driver’s license, state photo ID, military ID, or passport).
  • Leave purses and coats out of the visitation area.

  1. Count your group the way the jail counts it. Only three designated visitors can be in a single visit, and that total includes infants and children.
  2. Split your family into two groups. Inmates are limited to two visits per week, so you can rotate who attends across those two visits.
  3. Prioritize who needs the time most. Each visit is limited to 20 minutes, so it helps to decide in advance which three people will get the most out of that short session.

If your situation is complicated (multiple children, shared guardians, or questions about who should be on the list), call (979) 542-2800 or email Jail Admin Josh Ramirez at jramirez@co.lee.tx.us or Lt. Hentschel at hentschel@co.lee.tx.us before your visit. They can help you figure out the best plan.
