What to Wear (and Not Wear) When Visiting Lehigh County Jail — and How to Pass the Metal Detector

You'll need to pass through a metal detector before entering the visitation area at Lehigh County Jail. Plan your outfit accordingly - the wrong clothing or accessories can hold you up at the door.

Keep it simple. Jeans, slacks, or skirts and shorts that reach mid-thigh are all acceptable at Lehigh County Jail. Stick to these basics and you won't have to scramble for a backup outfit at the last minute.

What to Wear (and Not Wear) When Visiting Lehigh County Jail — and How to Pass the Metal Detector

Unacceptable Clothing

  • Outer garments, including coats, jackets, and hoodies
  • Hats
  • Skirts above mid-thigh
  • Shorts above mid-thigh
  • Tube tops
  • Clothing with an exposed midriff
  • Clothing with visible/exposed cleavage
  • Netted or see-through outer wear
  • Lingerie worn as outer wear
  • Clothing that makes reference to drugs, sex, race, hate groups, gangs, violence, or contains obscene language
  • Clothing with rips or tears that create revealing holes
  • Bare feet
  • Large metallic objects (for example, bulky earrings or belt buckles)

Worried about setting off the metal detector? Start with the obvious culprits. Lehigh County Jail flags large metallic objects as unacceptable - bulky earrings, big belt buckles, and similar items can trigger the alarm and slow you down.

Note: The Lobby Officer has the authority to ask you to remove any item that appears to be setting off the metal detector.

  1. Start with the “safe” basics - Choose jeans or slacks, or pick a skirt/shorts that reach to mid-thigh.
  2. Skip outer layers at the door - Don’t wear outer garments like coats, jackets, or hoodies into visitation.
  3. Avoid anything that’s too short or too revealing - That includes skirts or shorts above mid-thigh, tube tops, exposed midriff, and visible/exposed cleavage.
  4. Choose solid, non-see-through clothing - Netted or see-through outer wear and lingerie as outer wear are not allowed.
  5. Keep graphics and wording clean - Avoid clothing that references drugs, sex, race, hate groups, gangs, violence, or contains obscene language.
  6. Leave the “distressed” look at home - Rips or tears that create revealing holes can get you turned away.
  7. Wear real footwear - Bare feet aren’t allowed.
  8. Go light on metal - Large metallic objects (like bulky earrings or belt buckles) are listed as unacceptable and can set off the detector.
  9. Be ready to remove items if asked - The Lobby Officer can ask you to take off anything that appears to be triggering the metal detector.
