Virtual Visit Rules at SCDC and What Happens If You Break Them
Virtual visits can be a lifeline—but SCDC has strict rules about what can happen on camera and where you take the call. Know the boundaries ahead of time so you don't end up with a cut-off visit or lose your privileges entirely.
Prohibited Behaviors
- ✓ Bedrooms
- ✓ Bathrooms
- ✓ Nightclubs
Sexual behavior and nudity are strictly off-limits during SCDC virtual visits. Even a brief flash of either on camera can get your visit cut off immediately.
- ✓ Inappropriate attire by the visitor
- ✓ Any activity or display of gang paraphernalia
- ✓ Any use or display of drugs, alcohol, weapons, or related paraphernalia
Only the approved visitor should appear on camera. If an unauthorized person - adult or child - pops into frame, SCDC treats it as prohibited conduct. Find a spot where no one will walk through the background.
SCDC records virtual visits and can review them later. What's visible on camera matters just as much as what you say.
Note: If inappropriate actions occur during a virtual visit, the visit will be terminated immediately.
Violations don't just end the call - they have lasting consequences. If the incarcerated person breaks virtual visitation rules, they may face disciplinary action under SCDC Policy OP-22.14 (the Inmate Disciplinary System).
If you engage in prohibited conduct, SCDC may suspend or revoke your virtual visitation privileges. The consequences can extend further: that suspension could also affect your in-person visitation rights when in-person visits resume.
Practical Guidance
- ✓ Be in place in front of your device 15 minutes before the visit starts
- ✓ Choose a permitted setting (avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, nightclubs)
- Control who can enter the camera view - make sure no unauthorized adult or minor can suddenly appear on screen.
- Check your clothing before you connect - inappropriate attire is prohibited, even though you’re not visiting in person.
- Scan the background for gang-related items - any activity or display of gang paraphernalia is prohibited.
- Remove anything involving drugs, alcohol, or weapons - use or display (including related paraphernalia) is prohibited, so keep it completely out of view.
Reminder: Virtual visits are recorded and can be reviewed. If inappropriate actions occur, the visit will be terminated immediately.
