Sending Money to Someone at Limon: Methods, Timing, and the 20% Withholding Rule

Colorado Department of Corrections uses partner services to handle deposits. You have three options: pay online with a credit or debit card, pay over the phone with a card, or deposit cash in person at authorized retail locations around the country. Which one works best? It usually comes down to convenience - card from home, card by phone, or cash at a participating store.

  • Online deposit with a credit or debit card
  • Phone deposit with a credit or debit card
  • In-person cash deposit at authorized retail locations nationwide

Timing matters if your loved one needs to make a canteen order or cover something quickly. Money sent before 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time is generally available the next day.

That said, build in a buffer. CDOC advises allowing 2–3 days for funds to be processed and available, especially if you're sending money for canteen.

Here's something that surprises a lot of families: CDOC withholds a minimum of 20% of any deposit to apply toward court-ordered obligations. That money can go toward fines, fees, restitution, or child support - so the full amount you send won't necessarily be the full amount available to spend.

Heads up: With the mandatory 20% withholding, expect roughly $80 of every $100 deposit (sometimes less) to actually be available for your loved one to use.

Don't mail cash or money orders to fund an inmate account - CDOC doesn't accept them for deposits. Stick to the supported options: online card payments, phone card payments, or in-person cash deposits at authorized retail locations.

If a deposit doesn't show up when expected, or you have questions about inmate banking - including timing or how deductions work - contact the Inmate Bank at (719) 269-4271.

  1. Gather your deposit details - note when you sent it, the amount, and whether you used online, phone, or an in-person cash location.
  2. Check the timing window - deposits sent before 4:00 p.m. MT are generally available the next day, but allow 2–3 days to be safe.
  3. Call the Inmate Bank - reach out at (719) 269-4271 with your questions or to track down a missing deposit.
