Before your first visit to Lindsey State Jail: what to bring, what to leave, and how to avoid wasted trips
A little prep before you leave home makes your first visit go much smoother. Use this checklist for Lindsey State Jail so you don't get turned away at the door.
Before you drive to Lindsey State Jail, confirm the person you're visiting is still assigned there and has visitation privileges. Schedules shift. Privileges get suspended. Even if you have the right day and time, none of that matters if your visit isn't approved. Call the unit before you travel - it's the simplest way to avoid a wasted trip.
Note: Some inmates are restricted from having visitors aged 17 or under. A quick call before you leave can save you from showing up with a child who won’t be allowed in.
Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID for every adult in your group. Kids don't always get a free pass - ID requirements for minors depend on the situation and the inmate's visitation restrictions. If anything about your visit is out of the ordinary (first time, bringing a child, different people than usual), call ahead to confirm exactly what documentation you'll need at check-in.
- ✓ If anyone in your group is 17 or under, call ahead to confirm they’re allowed to visit and what identification or paperwork (if any) will be required.
Keep your wallet simple. No cash inside the secure facility - coins are the exception, capped at $35. If you're not sure what you'll need money for, bring only the allowed coins and leave everything else locked in your car.
No phones: Cell phones are not allowed inside the secure perimeter. Leave your phone in the car (powered off if you can) so you don’t risk being turned away.
- ✓ Leave extra cash at home (coins only, up to $35)
- ✓ Don’t bring your cell phone past the secure perimeter
- ✓ Assume your belongings may be checked - bring only what you truly need for the visit
Visiting hours are Saturdays and Sundays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. That said, schedules change and visits get canceled. A quick call before you go keeps you from showing up on the wrong day or after a cutoff.
- Talk to everyone who might visit that weekend - each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend, so you’ll need to decide who is going.
- Pick one visit time and stick to it - coordinate with the inmate and the people on the Visitors List so no one else makes the trip expecting to get in.
- Call the unit before you leave - confirm the visit is still on and that there aren’t any issues that would stop you at check-in.
Heads up: If someone has already used the one allowed visit that weekend, later visitors can be declined when they arrive. Coordinating ahead of time prevents that kind of last-minute disappointment.
Expect security when you arrive. Staff can search you and your vehicle, so don't bring anything you wouldn't want inspected. Travel light. Lock up anything unnecessary. Make sure prohibited items - especially your phone and extra cash - never cross into the secure perimeter.
Dress check: If you’re unsure whether an outfit will pass, call the unit before you go and ask. Wearing something conservative is the easiest way to avoid being turned away.
