Understanding visit types at Lindsey State Jail: contact, regular, and remote video visits
The TDCJ visitation scheduler uses specific visit-type labels that can be confusing at first. Here's what each option means, what's actually allowed, and what to do if you don't see the visit type you expected.
When you request a visit through the TDCJ visitation scheduler, you'll see four categories: Regular, Contact, Video/Tablet, and a fourth type shown in the system. The label that confuses people most? "Video/Tablet." This is not the same as the Securus Video program offered at limited units - don't assume they're interchangeable just because both involve video.
Note: All inmate visits are subject to electronic monitoring, except attorney-client visits.
Contact visits allow limited physical contact. You can embrace and kiss once at the beginning and once at the end - keep greetings and goodbyes brief and follow staff direction. These visits are still electronically monitored like any standard visit (attorney-client visits are the exception).
Reminder: Contact visits are still electronically monitored, and staff can step in if the contact rules aren’t followed.
- Choose “Remote Video Visit” when you’re planning - this is a live video visit through a kiosk.
- Schedule through the vendor website - remote video kiosk visits must be set up there, not by showing up in person.
- Double-check your appointment details - confirm the date and time you selected before you count on it.
Remote video kiosk visits are an add-on option for eligible inmates, separate from contact or regular visits. You get one per month, up to 60 minutes - so plan ahead if you're trying to stretch limited time. One more thing: the scheduler's "Video/Tablet" option is not the same as the Securus Video program offered at limited units.
Note: Remote video visits are also subject to electronic monitoring (attorney-client visits are the exception).
Don't see the visit type you want? That doesn't necessarily mean you're doing something wrong. The scheduler lists four visit types, but not every option appears for every situation. Before you make the trip, call the unit for confirmation - schedules update regularly, and a quick call can save you a wasted drive.
- ✓ Call the unit for final confirmation before you travel.
- ✓ Confirm which visit type(s) are available for the inmate right now.
- ✓ Ask what you should use to schedule (including the vendor website for remote video kiosk visits).
- ✓ Confirm that visits (other than attorney-client) are electronically monitored.
