Bringing Kids to Visit Livesay: ID Requirements and Who Can Visit

What your child needs to show for an in-person visit depends on their age. Kids 10 and older must present a government-issued photo ID. Children 9 and under need a certified long-form birth certificate instead - so if you don't already have one, plan ahead to request a certified copy.

Quick rule: Ages 10+ need a government-issued photo ID. Ages 9 and under need a certified long-form birth certificate.

Virtual visits use the same age-based ID split, but the check happens through the visitation coordinator rather than at a security checkpoint. Kids 10 and older will need to show a photo ID. For children under 10, you'll present a certified long-form birth certificate.

Virtual visit difference: You’ll show the ID or birth certificate to the visitation coordinator (not at an institution entry checkpoint).

Before you promise a child they can go, know this: minor nieces and nephews aren't automatically eligible to visit. They can't be approved until the inmate has been incarcerated with SCDC for at least three consecutive years and meets the other criteria in policy OP-22.09 (Inmate Visitation).

Heads up: Minor nieces/nephews have extra eligibility requirements under OP-22.09, including a three-consecutive-year SCDC incarceration rule.

Practical Checklist

  • If your child is 10 or older, bring a government-issued photo ID (for in-person visits).
  • If your child is 9 or younger, bring their certified long-form birth certificate (for in-person visits).
  • For virtual visits, be ready to show the visitation coordinator a photo ID for approved visitors 10+.
  • For virtual visits, have the child’s certified long-form birth certificate ready for approved minors under 10.
  • If the adult bringing the child is not the parent or legal guardian, bring SCDC Form 19-118 (Authorization for Adult Supervision of a Minor) for physical entry into the institution.
  1. Confirm who the supervising adult is - if the adult bringing the child is not the parent or legal guardian, you’ll need SCDC Form 19-118 for physical entry.
  2. Complete SCDC Form 19-118 - fill out the Authorization for Adult Supervision of a Minor before the day of the visit.
  3. Bring the form to the in-person visit - the form is required for entry into the institution (it isn’t required just to do a virtual visit).

Don’t get turned away at the door: If you’re not the child’s parent/legal guardian, SCDC Form 19-118 is required for entry, and kids under 10 use a certified long-form birth certificate as their ID.
