Contact Visits at Livesay: What to Expect When There’s No Plexiglass

Livesay is one of the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) medium-security institutions authorized for contact visits. That means no plexiglass barrier between you and your loved one. Here's what that changes, and how to confirm what your visit will look like before you make the drive.

Livesay Corrections Facility is listed by SCDC among medium-security institutions that allow contact visits. A "contact" visit means no plexiglass booth separating you from your loved one. Some physical contact is permitted, as long as you follow the institution's rules and staff directions. If you've only done non-contact visits before, expect the room setup and expectations around personal space to feel noticeably different. You'll be much closer than you would be behind glass.

Note: Contact visits happen without plexiglass barriers. Physical contact may be allowed, but it still has to stay within facility rules and what staff permit.

Even during contact visits, staff can end your visit quickly if they see behavior they consider inappropriate. SCDC makes this clear in its visitation guidance for recorded virtual visits: inappropriate actions can lead to immediate termination, possible suspension for the visitor, and disciplinary action for the inmate. The in-person setting is different, but the takeaway is the same. Act like you're being observed, because you likely are. If a visit crosses the line, expect staff to step in.

  • Sexual behavior or anything sexual in nature
  • Any display of nudity
  • Inappropriate attire
  • Activity or displays connected to gang paraphernalia
  • Unauthorized people appearing or participating
  • Any use or display of drugs or alcohol
  • Any use or display of weapons or related paraphernalia
  • Any unlawful activity, or depiction of unlawful activity

Reminder: Visits can be monitored, and staff can terminate a visit immediately if conduct is inappropriate.

Before you travel, confirm what kind of visit is being offered on the date you plan to come. The simplest approach: contact the SCDC Visitation office and ask directly whether your visit is expected to be contact or non-contact. This is especially worth doing if you're planning around work, childcare, or a long drive. You don't want to show up expecting one thing and get another.

  1. Call the Visitation Inquiry Line - Dial 803-896-1838 and press 1 for questions about the application process.
  2. Email the Visitation office - Send your question to visitation@doc.sc.gov.
  3. Confirm contact vs. non-contact for your date - Ask what is scheduled so you can plan your trip with fewer surprises.

  • Any personal device that communicates wirelessly (Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, cellular)
  • Children age 10 and older: government-issued photo ID
  • Children age nine and younger: certified long-form birth certificate

Tip: Gather kids' identification documents before you leave, and keep wireless devices out of the facility. Having the right paperwork ready (and leaving prohibited electronics at home or in your vehicle) can prevent delays or being turned away.
