Before You Drive to Lockhart Corrections Facility: A Pre‑Visit Checklist
A little prep can save you a wasted trip to Lockhart Corrections Facility. Use this checklist to confirm the person you're visiting is eligible, bring the right ID, and avoid items that will get you turned away at the gate.
Before you get on the road, confirm two things: the inmate is assigned to Lockhart Corrections Facility, and they currently have visitation privileges. If you use the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, you can add the inmate to your profile by searching with their TDCJ number or SID number. Double-check that you have the correct number. It must be 8 digits long.
Note: Even if what you see online looks right, call the unit before you travel. Unit visitation information updates on a schedule, and staff can confirm last-minute changes.
Why call? Visitation information doesn't update in real time. Unit data refreshes once daily on weekdays and multiple times per day on visitation days. A quick call before you leave gives you final confirmation, so you don't drive out only to learn something changed.
ID-and-documentation
- ✓ If you are 18 or older, bring a current government-issued photo ID.
- ✓ At least one ID you use must show a current physical address.
- ✓ Exceptions to the physical address requirement are made for certified victims of family violence who have address protection through the attorney general.
- ✓ For children 17 and younger, bring a birth certificate, DPS ID, or student ID in case identity verification is required.
Allowed-and-prohibited-items
- ✓ A small wallet or a clear plastic bag (Ziploc-type)
- ✓ Coins only, up to $35 total (vending machines in the visitation area accept coins)
- ✓ If you are bringing an infant or small child: no more than three diapers, baby wipes, and two baby bottles (stored in a clear plastic bag)
- ✓ Purses or diaper bags
- ✓ Cameras, photographs
- ✓ Paper money (cash is not allowed inside the secure perimeter, except coins up to $35)
- ✓ Cell phones, laptops, digital recorders, and other electronic or wireless devices
Expect your vehicle to be searched. All vehicles on TDCJ property are subject to search, so show up with your car already squared away. Before you arrive, make sure your doors, windows, and trunk are secured and locked.
- ✓ If you drive a truck, keep the bed free of garden tools, clothes, or anything that could be used as a weapon or to aid in an escape.
- ✓ If tools must be in the bed, secure them.
If you've been removed from an inmate's Visitors List, handle that before making new travel plans. You can submit a written appeal to the Director's Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342. The appeal must be submitted within 14 days of the date on the written notice of removal from the unit.
