The 10-Person Visitor List Rule at TDCJ: How It Works and When You Can Change It
Trying to visit someone in TDCJ? The Visitors List rules can feel like a roadblock—especially when you learn there's a cap and you can't swap names whenever you want. Here's how the 10-person limit actually works, and when changes are allowed.
TDCJ limits each inmate’s Visitors List to a maximum of 10 names. Practically, that means your loved one has to choose who they want approved for visits, and once the list hits 10, someone usually has to be removed before a new person can be added.
For institutional inmates, changes to the Visitors List - adding or removing names - are allowed once every six months. That timing is strict. Even if everyone agrees a swap needs to happen, it generally can't be done between change windows.
State jail, ISF (Intermediate Sanction Facility), and SAFP (Substance Abuse Felony Punishment) inmates have a shorter window: changes are allowed once every 60 days. Same rules apply - adding or removing names is limited to the change cycle - but you're not waiting as long as the six-month schedule.
- Get the inmate’s TDCJ or SID number - You’ll need it to search for them in the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, and it must be exactly 8 digits long.
- Use offender search if you don’t have the number - You can look it up through the online offender search.
- Call for the number if you need to - You can also get the number by phone at (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283. Phones are answered 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Once you submit your relationship to the inmate, that request sits in
Not sure if you're on the list? Start by confirming the inmate's 8-digit TDCJ/SID number and your account details. If you don't have the number, use the online offender search or call (936) 295-6371 or (800) 535-0283, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep the 10-name maximum in mind - if the list is full, someone will need to be removed during the next change window before you can be added.
