What You Can't Bring to a Visit at Louisiana State Penitentiary: Contraband & Medication Rules

Louisiana DOC defines

Note: Any article of food is considered contraband for visitation - don’t bring snacks, candy, or drinks into the visiting area.

These rules exist to keep visitation running smoothly across all DOC facilities - not to make your life harder. The more you stay within the guidelines, the faster check-in goes for everyone.

Electronics are a common reason visitors get stopped or turned away. Louisiana DOC's contraband rules cover telecommunications equipment and component hardware - anything used to call, record, store, or transmit information. That means phones, accessories, and recording gear of any kind. Don't assume you can keep your phone in your pocket or just turn it off. Leave electronics at home or locked in your car.

Medication is one of the few exceptions - but it's narrow. Only prescribed medication that's life-saving or life-sustaining is allowed during visitation. Even then, you can only bring the quantity needed for the duration of your visit. Plan ahead so you're not stuck choosing between your health needs and getting through the door. Keep medication straightforward and be ready to address it at check-in.

  • Bring only prescribed medication that is life-saving or life-sustaining
  • Limit the amount to what you need for the duration of the visit
  • Keep it in the original prescription container
  • Tell staff at the visiting desk that you have medication

Reminder: If you have medication with you, you must advise institutional staff at the visiting desk.
