Before Your First Visit to Lynchburg JDC: What to bring — and what to leave in the car
Your first visit goes smoother when you show up with the right basics and leave everything else locked in the car. Here's a quick, facility-specific guide to help you avoid delays or getting turned away at check-in.
Lynchburg JDC limits visitation to parents or legal guardians only. Not the youth's parent or legal guardian? Expect to be turned away - staff check this first.
Bring photo ID. You'll need to show it at check-in, so don't leave it in the car.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early to give yourself time to sign in. Show up right at the start, and you might get rushed through check-in - or miss your window entirely.
Space is limited: only two visitors are admitted on a regular visitation day. CPP or Re-Entry visits have different rules, but only for pre-approved visitors. Confirm that approval before bringing a larger group.
Every visitor passes through a metal detector. Wear clothes and carry items that won't slow you down at the entrance.
Reminder: Don’t give anything directly to your child during the visit. If something needs to be provided, follow staff instructions rather than trying to hand it over yourself.
Female visitors are asked to leave purses in the car. Bring only what you need for check-in and the visit itself.
Outside food and drinks aren't allowed inside. Leave them in the car.
Bringing kids? Keep them with you at all times. Children can't be left unsupervised in the lobby - not even for a minute while you check in.
Need a snack or drink? Use the on-site vending machines. You can purchase up to two snacks and one drink.
Regular visitation days allow a maximum of two visitors. Even if more people show up hoping to rotate in, you may run into problems at the door.
CPP and Re-Entry visits may allow up to four visitors - but only when pre-approved by the Department of Juvenile Justice. Think your visit qualifies? Confirm the pre-approval before bringing extra people.
Denied entry: Parents suspected of being intoxicated or under the influence will be turned away. If there's any chance this could be questioned, don't risk the visit.
Leave immediately: Hostile, argumentative, or disruptive visitors will be asked to leave on the spot. If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, take a breath - staying calm protects your time with your child.
