Reporting to Serve a Sentence at Marathon County Jail: where to go, what to bring, fees, and transfer rules
Reporting to serve a sentence is stressful—especially when you're trying to get everything right the first time. Here's what Marathon County Jail says you need to know about when to report, where to go, what to bring (including medications), fees, transfer requests, and OWI rules that can affect Huber privileges.
After conviction, you generally have 45 days to begin your Marathon County Jail sentence. The exception? If the court orders a different timeline. Your court paperwork controls if it conflicts with the 45-day window.
Head to the Jail Intake Office on the 2nd floor at the 5th St/Washington St entrance. That's where you'll pick your start date and time, and where you'll get the paperwork you need for your incarceration.
Show up completely clean and sober. The jail requires no trace of alcohol or illegal drugs in your system when you arrive to begin your sentence.
Taking prescription medication? Bring it in the original container with the pharmacy label showing the medication name, prescribing doctor, and dosing instructions. Not all medications are allowed inside, so if you're unsure about a specific prescription, contact jail nursing staff before you arrive - don't wait until intake to find out.
Fees
- ✓ $30 First Day Fee
- ✓ $18 Daily Pay for Stay fee
Even if the court says you can serve your Marathon County sentence in another county, you still need to sign up for a report date at Marathon County Jail. You'll also complete a Transfer Request Form, which gets sent to your preferred county along with your Judgment of Conviction.
Transfers aren't guaranteed. Marathon County Jail may refuse them, and due to overcrowding, the jail says it will only consider transfers for people who qualify for the Electronic Monitoring Program (EMP).
Sentenced for OWI? Be ready to show proof of ignition interlock compliance. Since July 1, 2010, anyone convicted of an OWI must have an ignition interlock device (IID) installed on vehicles they own or operate - or meet a statutory alternative. Bring proof when you report: installation documentation, title transfer papers, or a signed exemption form.
Warning: If you don’t comply with the IID requirement, Marathon County Jail says you’re ineligible to exercise Huber (work-release) privileges.
