How to Visit Facility

NCDAC offers video visiting through the Getting Out Visits app. If getting to the facility is difficult, video visits let you stay connected without the travel and check-in hassle of an in-person visit.

Only people on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list can use video visits. If you haven't been approved yet, you'll need to complete that process before trying to connect.

The incarcerated person joins video visits using an electronic tablet or video kiosk inside the facility. Even if your setup is ready, the visit depends on them being able to access the tablet or kiosk when it's time.

Normally, each incarcerated person can have one visiting session per week, lasting up to two hours. Sessions typically allow up to three approved visitors, though the warden can adjust that number based on space and operational needs.

Note: Video visits can be on-demand or scheduled for a future date and time. Check which option applies before you plan around a specific time.

How to Visit Facility
  1. Schedule an in-person visit by appointment - In-person visits are by appointment only. Call or email the prison where the person is housed to schedule.
  2. Confirm your details during scheduling - Since visits are appointment-based, make sure you have the correct date and time before you travel.
  • Download and set up the Getting Out Visits app for video visiting
  • Confirm whether your video visit will be on-demand or scheduled for a future date/time
  • Be ready for your loved one to join from their electronic tablet or a video kiosk in the facility
  1. Make sure you’re approved to visit - Video visits are limited to people on the incarcerated person’s approved visitors list.
  2. Do not try to visit until approval is in place - If you are not on the approved list, the visit will not go forward.
  • Plan around the normal limit of no more than one visiting session per week, up to two hours (not counting legal, law enforcement, or clergy visits)
  • Keep your group within the normal maximum of three approved visitors per session
  • Build in flexibility, since facility leadership can modify the visitor-count limit based on operations and space

If you have an in-person visit scheduled, call the prison the day before to confirm everything is still on. In-person visits are by appointment only, so a quick check can save you a wasted trip if anything has changed.

  • Confirm that video visiting through the Getting Out Visits app is currently available for your situation
  • Ask whether your video visit will be on-demand or must be scheduled in advance
  • Verify that your name is on the incarcerated person’s approved visitors list

Note: The normal maximum is three approved visitors per session, but wardens can modify that number based on operational and space considerations. If you’re trying to visit with a larger group, confirm the current limit first.
