Can I take screenshots or record a VADOC video visit? (No, and here's why)
If you're using Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) video visitation, don't record, film, take pictures, or screenshot the visit. These actions are prohibited and can cost you future visits.
No. VADOC rules prohibit recording or filming a video visit, whether it is done by the visitor or by any third party. You also cannot take pictures or screenshots of the incarcerated person during the visit.
This prohibition also covers bringing other people into the visit through outside technology. No third party can join using anything other than the GTL Visitor Web application.
VADOC holds both sides accountable. The incarcerated person and the visitor share responsibility for inappropriate behavior during a video visit, and both can be suspended from video visitation.
Six-month suspension: Video visitation privileges will be suspended for 6 months when the rules are violated.
Enhanced sanctions: Some violations can lead to enhanced sanctions, up to and including a permanent ban on use of the system.
Visiting from a VADOC Visitor Center? Portable electronics are treated as a serious rule violation. Cell phones, pagers, laptops, gaming systems, and other portable electronics aren't allowed during visitation. Leave them outside the Visitor Center. If you bring one inside or use it during your visit, the visit ends immediately.
For at-home video visits, the rule is just as strict. You can only have the single device you're using to connect. No other portable electronics or technology can be present during the visit.
Practical Precautions
- ✓ Do not record or film the visit (and do not let any third party record it).
- ✓ Do not take pictures or screenshots of the incarcerated person.
- ✓ Do not bring a third party into the visit using technology outside of the GTL Visitor Web application.
- ✓ If you are at a Visitor Center, leave cell phones, pagers, laptops, gaming systems, and other portable electronics outside. Having or using them inside ends the visit.
- ✓ If you are visiting from home, keep only the device you are using to connect the visit present. No other technology should be in the room.
- ✓ Treat these rules as shared responsibility. Both you and your loved one can be suspended from video visitation for violations.
Tempted to grab a screenshot "just this once"? It's not worth the risk. A violation can lead to a six-month suspension of video visitation privileges. Some violations bring enhanced sanctions, up to and including a permanent ban from the system.
