How to Visit Facility
Getting approved ahead of time and showing up early makes visiting much smoother. Here are the rules that trip people up most often, plus the exact steps to follow.
You'll need approval through the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) online visitation application before you can visit. Set aside 20 to 30 minutes to complete it. Have these ready: the incarcerated person's name or ID number, a form of picture ID, and your Social Security number. On visit day, all visitors age 18 or older must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID to participate in video visitation.
Timing is strict for video visits. If you're visiting from home using the GTL system, log in 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. Visiting through an AFOI Visitor Center? Arrive at least 20 minutes early.
Reminder: No recording, filming, photos, or screenshots during the visit. Follow the dress code (clothing must cover from neck to kneecaps, and underwear is required). If the inmate needs to use the restroom, the visit ends immediately.
- Complete the online visitation application. Plan for about 20 to 30 minutes, and gather the inmate’s name or ID number, your picture ID, and your Social Security number.
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (18+). Adults must present a valid government-issued photo ID to participate in video visitation.
- Log into GTL early for home video visits. You must be logged into the GTL system 15 minutes before the visit start time.
- Arrive early for AFOI Visitor Center visits. You must arrive at the Visitor Center at least 20 minutes before your scheduled visit.
- Treat the appointment time as fixed. Visits are for the exact time slots as scheduled, and fees will not be refunded for late arrivals or missed visits.
- ✓ Do not record or film the visit, and do not take pictures or screenshots of the inmate.
- ✓ Follow the dress code: clothing must cover from the neck to the kneecaps, and all visitors must wear underwear.
- ✓ Plan around restroom needs. If the inmate must use the restroom during the visit, the visit will be terminated.
Check the timing rules before you schedule and again on the day of your visit. Home visitors need to log into GTL 15 minutes early. AFOI Visitor Center visitors should arrive 20 minutes early. Still, double-check the current instructions tied to your specific appointment.
Know the current requirements for approval and check-in. VADOC requires the online visitation application. You'll need the inmate's name or ID number, a photo ID, and your Social Security number to complete it. For the visit itself, confirm the ID you plan to bring is valid and government-issued (required for visitors 18 or older).
Double-check before you connect: Recording, filming, photos, and screenshots are all prohibited. The dress code (neck to kneecaps, underwear required) and restroom termination rule can be enforced strictly. Make sure you're in compliance before the visit starts.
