Before Your First Visit to Mark H Luttrell Correctional (TN): What to Bring and What to Leave Behind
Your first visit goes smoother when you show up with the right ID, pack light, and dress for the rules. Use this checklist to avoid delays at the door—or getting turned away entirely.
You'll need a valid photo ID to visit Mark H Luttrell Correctional. TDOC requires an original, government-issued photo ID to confirm your identity at check-in.
Two things matter: it must be the original (not a photo or copy) and government-issued. Bring the physical card - driver's license, state ID, passport - so staff can verify your identity at the front desk.
Allowed Items and Packing
- ✓ Your original, government-issued photo ID
- ✓ Your car keys or key fob
- ✓ If you’re bringing an infant: needed baby items (such as diapers, formula powder, and unopened sealed baby food) packed in a clear plastic bag
Pack light. You can only bring your photo ID and car keys into the visitation area - that's it. Leave your phone, smart watch, wallet, and other personal items locked in your car. Bringing a baby? Keep supplies to what you'll actually use and put them in a clear plastic bag for easy inspection.
Plan for security screening when you arrive. You'll go through multiple checks, including a body scanner. Staff may also search your vehicle as part of routine security.
- ✓ Firearms
- ✓ Weapons
- ✓ Drugs
- ✓ Alcohol
Warning: Security screening is part of every visit, and prohibited items (including firearms, weapons, drugs, and alcohol) are strictly not allowed on state property.
Dress appropriately - clothing and footwear, for every visitor regardless of age. If your outfit feels borderline, change before you leave home. Dress code violations are a common reason people lose their visit.
- ✓ Clothing made from spandex or spandex-type fabric
- ✓ Transparent or translucent garments
- ✓ Sleeveless shirts and blouses
- ✓ Dresses or clothing exposing a bare chest or midriff
- ✓ Camouflage attire
- ✓ Worn or tattered clothing
- ✓ Bandanas
- ✓ Excessive jewelry
- ✓ Flip flops
- ✓ Steel/composite-toed shoes
- ✓ Shower shoes
Note: Wardens/Superintendents may further define dress requirements at each facility, so be ready for stricter enforcement than you expected.
Day of Visit Checklist
- ✓ Bring your original, government-issued photo ID
- ✓ Bring only what’s allowed into the visitation area: your photo ID and car keys/key fob
- ✓ If you need baby supplies, pack items like diapers, formula powder, and unopened sealed baby food in a clear plastic bag
- ✓ Leave phones, smart watches, wallets, and other personal items locked in your secured vehicle
Bringing a child? The custodial parent or legal guardian must provide a completed and notarized Parental Consent/Release for Minor's Visitation Form (CR-2152, page 2). This form also authorizes the child to be searched. Get it handled well before visit day - not the morning of.
Even with statewide TDOC rules, facility leadership can add their own requirements. The Warden at Mark H Luttrell Correctional may enforce stricter clothing and footwear standards, so dress conservatively and check for facility-specific visitor guidance before you leave home.
