What ID will actually get you through the door at Eastern Regional Jail (Martinsburg, WV)
Getting turned away at check-in is frustrating—and usually avoidable. Bring the right ID, make sure it's the original physical document, and have proper paperwork ready for any children visiting with you.
You'll need one government-issued photo ID to get through check-in at Eastern Regional Jail. Acceptable options include a driver's license, a state-issued non-driver ID, a U.S. passport (book or card), or a U.S. military ID. Bring the original - no photocopies, no printouts, no substitute cards.
Note: You must call at least one day in advance to schedule your visit.
Accepted Checklist
- ✓ Driver’s license - accepted as required identification
- ✓ Non-driving identification card - accepted as required identification
- ✓ U.S. passport book - accepted as required identification
- ✓ U.S. passport card - accepted as required identification
- ✓ U.S. military ID - accepted as required identification
Using a passport? Either format works - the traditional passport book or the wallet-sized passport card.
Unacceptable
- ✓ Social Security card - not accepted as visitation ID
- ✓ Credit card - not accepted as visitation ID
- ✓ Insurance card - not accepted as visitation ID
- ✓ Self-generated identification - not accepted (for example, homemade or printed IDs)
Birth certificates are the one exception to the photo ID rule, and they're only accepted for minor children visiting with a parent or legal guardian. Kids must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or another adult immediate family member to visit.
- Confirm who the child is visiting with - If the minor will be with an adult immediate family member who is not the parent or legal guardian, extra paperwork is required.
- Get the Juvenile Visitation Form signed by the non-incarcerated parent/legal guardian - The form must show that the parent/legal guardian is giving permission for the child to be with that adult on facility grounds for the visit.
- Have the form notarized and bring it with you - The adult accompanying the child must present the notarized Juvenile Visitation Form at the facility.
Tip: Bringing a minor? Sort out the paperwork beforehand. Birth certificates only work when the child is with a parent or legal guardian. If another immediate family member is bringing the child instead, you'll need a notarized Juvenile Visitation Form.
Don't have an accepted ID? Don't show up hoping for the best - reschedule instead. Since visits must be scheduled by phone at least a day ahead anyway, call as soon as you realize your ID won't work. For visits with a minor, the easiest route is having the parent or legal guardian come along. If another immediate family member is bringing the child, make sure they have the notarized Juvenile Visitation Form ready.
- ✓ Reschedule your visit by phone if you don’t have an accepted ID (you have to call at least a day in advance anyway)
- ✓ If you’re bringing a minor, make sure they’re with a parent/legal guardian, or bring the notarized Juvenile Visitation Form when an immediate-family adult (not the parent/guardian) is accompanying them
- ✓ Don’t rely on a Social Security card, credit card, insurance card, or any self-generated ID to get you through check-in
