How to Get Approved to Visit Someone at Mass Treatment Center (MA)

Getting approved to visit Mass Treatment Center starts before you ever set foot on the property. Here's the key: the inmate has to add you to their pre-approved visiting list first. That's their responsibility, not yours. Since approval takes time, start early. Make sure your loved one knows exactly who to include - full legal names and any details they'll need to match your application.

Start by confirming your loved one has actually added you to their pre-approved visiting list. Ask them directly. If you're not on the list yet, nothing else matters - getting your name added is what opens the door.

Once you're on the list, complete the Visitor Application Form and mail it to Mass Treatment Center. The mailing address is on the third page of the application and also on the Prison Locations page. Take your time - make sure every detail matches your ID exactly. Small mismatches can slow things down.

After you mail it, the facility processes your application. Both you and the inmate will be notified whether you're approved or denied. Wait for that notification before planning your trip - approval is what makes you eligible to visit.

Bringing a child? Good news: minors under 18 don't need pre-approval. But they must come with a parent or legal guardian who has physical custody - and that adult has to already be on the inmate's pre-approved visiting list.

If the adult bringing the child isn't the parent or guardian with physical custody, there's an extra step. That adult must submit a completed Minor Consent Form and get approval from the Superintendent before visiting with the minor. Plan ahead - without that approval, you may be turned away.

If your loved one was recently committed, there's a short grace period while pre-approval is pending. During this time, newly committed inmates can have two visitors, plus a reasonable number of children.

That temporary flexibility doesn't replace the paperwork. Newly committed inmates must submit an Inmate Visitor Listing within 30 days of admission. After that deadline, anyone who hasn't been properly approved won't be allowed to visit.

Visitor lists have size limits based on security level. Maximum Security and Medium Security institutions allow up to 8 pre-approved visitors. Minimum Security and Pre-release institutions allow up to 10.

Since list space is limited, coordinate with your loved one about who gets included. The inmate can revise their visitor list up to three times per year - changes are possible, but not unlimited.

Need to bring life-saving medication or a medical device? Don't wait until visit day. You must get prior approval from the Superintendent and submit written documentation from a healthcare professional. Every visit, you'll need to declare the medication or device and show the Superintendent's written approval.

Were you recently paroled or released from Department custody? You'll need Superintendent permission before visiting someone still confined. Timing matters too: former inmates who are family members may not be considered for visitation approval until six months after release. Other applicants with prior incarceration who aren't immediate family may apply one year after release.

Note: A Superintendent or designee can reject a visitation application from someone with felony convictions if they believe it could jeopardize institutional or individual security.

If your application is denied, both you and the inmate will be notified. Visiting privileges can also be suspended or revoked for rule violations. When that happens, you'll receive notice explaining the reason, how long the suspension lasts, and how to appeal. Keep that notice - you'll need those details if you want to challenge the decision.

Video visits have the same requirements as in-person visits: you must complete the pre-approval process and be on your loved one's approved list before scheduling. Once approved, you'll also need to create a Securus Video Visitation account online.
