How to Address a Letter to Someone at Maury Correctional Institution (and Why It Matters)
If your letter is addressed the wrong way, it can get delayed or sent back. At Maury Correctional Institution, getting the format right is the difference between your mail being scanned and delivered, or returned to you unopened.
At Maury Correctional Institution (and other North Carolina Department of Adult Correction prisons), regular personal mail goes through TextBehind. Your non-legal letter gets screened, scanned, and delivered electronically to the person's tablet. Because it's a scanning process, small formatting details on the envelope matter a lot more than they would with traditional mail.
If the envelope isn't addressed exactly the way TextBehind requires, the mailroom won't reroute it or try to figure it out. It gets returned to you. Using the correct format from the start saves you time, postage, and the frustration of waiting while your loved one gets nothing.
For a standard personal letter (non-legal mail), address the envelope to TextBehind's Maryland P.O. Box using these lines, in this exact order: Offender Name and OPUS Number Full Name of Prison (do not abbreviate) P.O. Box 247 Phoenix, MD 21131
Here's an example you can copy and adjust. Just replace the name and OPUS number with your loved one's information: John Doe #1234567 Maury Correctional Institution P.O. Box 247 Phoenix, MD 21131 That Maryland P.O. Box is the one to use for letters that will be scanned and delivered. Maury Correctional Institution also has its own mailing address listed as P.O. Box 506, Maury, NC 28554, but that's separate from the TextBehind addressing format above.
Note: TextBehind handles screening and scanning for non-legal mail. Using the exact four-line format is what gets your letter into that process.
On the top left of the envelope, include a complete return address with your full first and last name. Don't use initials. TextBehind can return mail that doesn't meet this standard, even if everything else looks correct.
After your letter is scanned, the original paper doesn't automatically go to your loved one. If you want the original letter and its contents mailed back to you, you have a 30-day window to request it from TextBehind for a $2.50 service fee. After 30 days, originals are shredded. Plan ahead if you're thinking about sending anything you can't replace.
TextBehind is only for scanning non-legal letter mail. Don't send packages or publications through TextBehind. They'll be returned to you. For items that ship as packages (including books ordered from a retailer), use the prison's street address instead.
For Maury Correctional Institution, the street address is: 2568 Moore Rouse Road Hookerton, NC 28538
