Where to Send Mail to Someone at McConnell Unit (and what belongs at the Digital Processing Center)
If you're mailing letters or photos to someone at the McConnell Unit, the address you use depends on what you're sending. Since September 2023, most personal mail goes through TDCJ's Digital Mail Processing Center. A few important categories, though, still need to go directly to the unit.
Starting September 6, 2023, incoming mail for people housed at the McConnell Unit moved to the TDCJ Digital Mail platform. Most personal correspondence now goes to the Digital Mail Processing Center, where it's sorted, scanned, and uploaded to the person's secure tablet. This is the address you'll use for everyday items like letters, photos, and greeting cards.
Note: As of September 6, 2023, most personal mail for McConnell Unit goes to the TDCJ Digital Mail Processing Center, where it's scanned and delivered to the inmate's tablet.
When sending personal mail through the Digital Processing Center, formatting matters. Address the envelope to "Texas Department of Criminal Justice," then list the inmate's full first and last name plus their TDCJ number. Use the Dallas PO Box shown below. If the name or number is missing, your mail is more likely to be delayed or returned.
- ✓ Start the address with: Texas Department of Criminal Justice
- ✓ Include the inmate’s full first and last name
- ✓ Include the inmate’s TDCJ number
- ✓ Use this destination address: PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400
A few categories of mail should not go through the Digital Mail Processing Center. Legal mail is one. It needs to be sent directly to the inmate's unit of assignment (the McConnell Unit). The same applies to media mail, books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified publishers. Paperwork requiring the inmate's signature should also go straight to the unit.
- ✓ Legal mail, send directly to the McConnell Unit (not the Digital Mail Processing Center)
- ✓ Media mail, send directly to the McConnell Unit (not the Digital Mail Processing Center)
- ✓ Books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified publishers, send directly to the McConnell Unit (not the Digital Mail Processing Center)
- ✓ Documents that require the inmate’s signature, send directly to the McConnell Unit (not the Digital Mail Processing Center)
Two common mix-ups cause a lot of frustration. First, do not mail trust fund deposits to the McConnell Unit (or any inmate's facility of assignment). Second, do not mail personal letters, photos, or other items to the Inmate Trust Fund. Another pitfall: do not send inmate mail to PO Box 60. Inmate mail must go to the person's unit of assignment using the correct unit address, or through the Digital Mail Processing Center when it qualifies as personal correspondence.
Warning: Do not send trust fund deposits to the McConnell Unit, and do not send personal mail or other items to the Inmate Trust Fund. Also, do not address inmate mail to PO Box 60. Misdirected mail can be delayed or returned.
If your loved one doesn't have a tablet, they'll still receive your mail. The Digital Mail Processing Center provides black-and-white printed copies of everything that was scanned.
