How to Become an Approved Visitor at Meriwether County Jail
Visiting someone in jail starts with paperwork. At Meriwether County Jail, your first step is getting approved through the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) visitation request process.
You can't schedule a visit until you're an approved visitor. GDC requires you to complete a Visitation Request Form and submit it to the facility where your loved one is housed. Approval comes first - then you can schedule.
Have your details ready before you start the form. You'll need the offender's GDC ID, plus your own information: name, email address, relationship to the person you're visiting, date of birth, phone number, and ID type. If you choose a driver's license or state ID, you'll enter those details on the form as well.
Note: You must be 18 or older to select Driver’s License or State ID as your ID type on the Visitation Request Form.
Submit the completed form to the facility where the inmate is housed. This matters - approval is tied to the specific facility, so sending it to the wrong place will slow things down. Not sure where your loved one is currently held? Use GDC's resources to confirm the location before submitting.
Reasons Denied Revoked
- ✓ Visitation can be refused or revoked if you’re suspected of introducing contraband, caught on the premises with contraband, or attempt to bring contraband into the facility.
- ✓ Visitation can be denied or revoked if you’re found deceptive on the “significant other” form, or if you’re repeatedly warned about a particular action.
- ✓ Visitation privileges may be suspended to meet special security needs of the facility.
Thinking about appealing a visitation decision? Know the limits. GDC's Ombudsman unit cannot overturn a Warden's decision about visitation.
After Submit Tips
- ✓ Double-check that the offender’s GDC ID and your contact details are correct before you submit.
- ✓ Keep a copy (photo or printout) of the completed form for your records.
- ✓ If you don’t hear back after submitting, follow up with the facility where your loved one is incarcerated to check on your request.
