Setting Up Phone Calls from Michael Unit: Registration, Rules, and AdvanceConnect

To receive phone calls from someone at the Michael Unit, your number needs to be registered in the TDCJ phone system first. Once that's done, staying on top of the registration rules and the AdvanceConnect payment requirement will help you avoid missed calls and account issues.

Before you can receive calls from a TDCJ inmate, you'll need to register your phone number through the Texas Inmate Telephone Friends & Family Enrollment. Have the inmate's TDCJ ID number handy. You'll need it to complete the registration.

  • You must be the registered owner of the telephone number.
  • The name on your driver license or state ID must match the name on the telephone listing or bill.
  • You must confirm you are at least 18 years old.
  • You must agree to allow the inmate to call the telephone number.

By registering, you're agreeing to follow the calling rules on your end. That means no forwarding calls, no three-way calling, and no speakerphone during calls from the inmate. These restrictions are how TDCJ keeps calls controlled and manageable.

  1. Get the inmate’s TDCJ ID number. You will need it to register your phone number to receive calls.
  2. Register your phone number online. Use the Texas Inmate Telephone Friends & Family Enrollment to enroll the number you want the inmate to call.
  3. Call for help if you get stuck. For help finding the TDCJ number or help with registration, call (936) 295-6371, (800) 535-0283, or (866) 806-7804.

The phone system only allows calls to certain types of numbers: home landlines, post-paid cell phones, and pre-paid cell phones. Calls to internet services, 800 numbers, businesses, pay phones, or international numbers are not allowed. Make sure the number you register fits the allowed list.

Important update: Starting December 1, 2025, a funded AdvanceConnect account is required to pay for inmate phone calls. If you plan to keep paying for calls, set up and fund your AdvanceConnect account ahead of time.
