Sending Mail to Someone at Middleton Unit: Digital Mail vs. Direct-to-Unit

Since September 6, 2023, most mail for TDCJ inmates at Middleton Unit goes digital. Send it to the Digital Mail Processing Center, where staff sort, scan, and upload it to the inmate's secure tablet. Some items still need to go directly to the unit - legal mail, media mail, books and magazines from verified publishers, packages, subscriptions, and anything requiring the inmate's signature.

TDCJ launched its digital mail platform on September 6, 2023. Now, most incoming correspondence routes through the Digital Mail Processing Center to be sorted, scanned, and uploaded to the inmate's secure tablet. What does this mean for you? Letters, greeting cards, and photos all get digitized. Messages and photos are scanned in color, and the inmate can save them permanently on their tablet to revisit anytime.

Exceptions

• ✓ Legal mail (send directly to the unit)
• ✓ Media mail (send directly to the unit)
• ✓ Books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified senders or publishers (send directly to the unit)
• ✓ Documents that require the inmate’s signature (send directly to the unit)

Some mail needs to skip the digital route entirely. If what you're sending falls into an exception category - legal documents, publications from verified senders, or anything requiring the inmate's signature - send it directly to Middleton Unit. These items need to arrive as originals, not scans.

No tablet? No problem. Inmates without one still receive their mail - just as black-and-white printed copies of the scanned correspondence.
