How to get on the approved visit list at Mike Durfee State Prison

At Mike Durfee State Prison - and all South Dakota DOC facilities - you can't just show up. Every visitor needs to be on the inmate's approved visit list. Staff check this list before letting anyone through. Get confirmation that you're approved before making plans. Otherwise, you risk traveling, taking time off, and waiting in line only to be turned away at the door.

The easiest way to get added is through the South Dakota DOC visitation / GTL visit portal. The online application lets you submit your information directly, and it's typically the fastest route. If other family members are applying too, have everyone use the same portal. Mixing methods - some online, some by mail - can lead to delays or missed applications.

No internet access? You can use the printable visitation application instead. It accomplishes the same thing - getting you reviewed and added to the approved list - just on paper. Once you've filled it out, mail the completed form directly to the facility.

You can submit your completed application by email or mail. To email it, send it to VisitList@state.sd.us. If you're using the printable version, mailing it to the facility works too. Either way, make sure your application is complete, legible, and signed before sending.

Before applying for video or in-person visits, check with the person you want to visit to see if you're already an approved caller. If you are, you may not need to submit anything new. If you're not, you'll know to apply before trying to schedule a visit.
