At MSDF, people in general population can make unlimited phone calls each day. The exception: anyone on restriction may have their phone access limited or revoked entirely.

Phones aren't available around the clock. They shut off during counts and every night at 9:00 p.m. If you're waiting for a call and it's getting late, the phones may already be off for the evening.

There's a physical rule to know: callers must stand while using the phone. If your loved one has trouble standing for long periods, keep conversations focused when you connect.

Call attempt limit: Back-to-back calls aren't allowed. If they don't connect within 3 minutes, they must leave the phone area and wait at least 15 minutes before trying again.

Assume regular calls can be listened to. All calls - except properly placed attorney calls - may be monitored and recorded. Avoid discussing anything sensitive or case-related, even if the conversation feels private.

Attorney calls work differently. They must be placed collect, so the attorney's office has to accept charges for the call to go through.

  1. Get form DOC-1631 - This is the form used for attorney contact information changes.
  2. Update the attorney details - Add, delete, or correct the attorney’s address or phone number on the form.
  3. Turn in the completed DOC-1631 - Submitting the form is how the facility updates the attorney contact information on file.
