Who Your Loved One Can Call from MSDF: Attorney Calls, Monitored Calls, and the Public Defender 'Red Phone'
Phone rules at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF) can get confusing fast, especially when legal calls are involved. Here's how personal calls, attorney calls, and the Public Defender "red phone" actually work.
At MSDF, all calls except properly placed attorney calls may be monitored and recorded. If your loved one is calling you, friends, or anyone other than their attorney, assume the call isn't private. Stick to safe topics.
Attorney calls follow different rules, but there are still details that trip people up. At MSDF, someone in custody who calls their attorney must place that call as a collect call, not a regular personal call.
- Get the DOC-1631 form - Your loved one is responsible for making attorney contact changes using DOC-1631.
- Fill it out to add, delete, or update the attorney’s information - Use the form to change the attorney’s address or phone number.
- Submit the DOC-1631 through the institution’s process - Once it is turned in, the updated attorney information can be used for properly placed attorney calls.
Note: Personal calls can be monitored and recorded, but properly placed attorney calls are treated differently. If an attorney's phone number or address changes, your loved one needs to update it using form DOC-1631 so the call routes correctly.
MSDF has a Public Defender "red phone" available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This is a direct line to the Public Defender's Office in Milwaukee for people with an open or pending revocation or criminal case.
