Monmouth County Jail Dress Code: What Visitors Can and Cannot Wear

Monmouth County Jail enforces its dress code strictly. Show up wearing something that breaks the rules, and you won't get in. Plan your outfit before you leave home.

Here's one people miss: no outerwear in the visiting room. That means no overcoats, topcoats, jackets, heavy-gauge jackets, or full-length jackets. The facility has lockers, so bundle up for the trip and stash your coat before heading in.

Skirts, shorts, and culottes need to hit at least your fingertips when your arms hang at your sides - or reach mid-thigh. Anything shorter won't pass.

Length isn't the only thing staff check. Slits and inseams on skirts, shorts, or culottes must stay less than three inches above the knee.

Reminder: Clothing that exposes undergarments or any portion of the body considered private is prohibited, even if it technically meets the length rule.

Leave the see-through fabrics at home. Transparent and fishnet clothing won't fly - stick with solid materials that stay opaque under bright lights.

Your top needs to cover your shoulders and midriff completely. Tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, and low-cut shirts are all off-limits. Same goes for anything that exposes your torso or back. If your shirt might shift and reveal undergarments when you move, pick something with more coverage.

Warning: Underwire bras aren't allowed in the Visit Hall. Wear a non-underwire option to avoid getting stopped at check-in.

Footwear Accessories

  • Thong sandals
  • Flip flops
  • Beach footwear

Hats and headgear aren't permitted unless they're religious and pre-approved. If you wear religious headwear, expect a pat frisk or metal detector screening - and staff may ask you to remove it for inspection in a private area. Refuse the search, and your visit gets canceled.

  1. Bring a modest extra layer - If you’re not 100% sure a top meets the coverage rules, pack a simple cover-up you can put on before you enter.
  2. Plan for your outerwear - Overcoats and jackets can’t go into the visiting room, but lockers are available, so you can store them after you arrive.
