Monmouth County Jail Dress Code: What Visitors Can and Cannot Wear
Monmouth County Jail enforces a strict visitor dress code. The simplest way to avoid a wasted trip? Dress conservatively and plan for screening at the door.
Monmouth County Jail has a strict dress code for visitors. Show up wearing something that breaks the rules, and you will be denied entry.
Leave heavy outerwear in the car if you can. Overcoats, topcoats, jackets, heavy-gauge jackets, and full-length jackets are not allowed in the visiting room. If you do bring one, lockers are available for storing belongings during your visit.
Culottes, skirts, shorts, and similar bottoms must reach at least to your fingertips when your arms hang at your sides (roughly mid-thigh length). When in doubt, go with the longer option.
Quick check: Inseams and slits on culottes, skirts, and shorts must be less than three inches above the knee.
Skip anything see-through. Transparent or fishnet clothing is banned, and anything that exposes undergarments or private areas is prohibited. This applies to bottoms just as much as tops, so avoid sheer panels and materials that become transparent under bright lights.
Pick a top that fully covers your shoulders and midriff. Tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, low-cut shirts, and anything exposing your shoulders, midriff, torso, or back are all banned. Even minor exposure of undergarments or private areas can get you turned away.
Underwire rule: Any bra containing underwire is not permitted in the Visit Hall.
Even if the cut of your shirt passes, the fabric can still be a problem. Transparent or fishnet tops are not allowed.
Footwear matters here. Thong sandals, flip-flops, and beach footwear are not permitted. If you are unsure what counts as "beach footwear," stick with closed-toe shoes.
Skip the hat unless it is religious headwear approved for visits. If your headwear is religious, be prepared to explain that at check-in and follow the search procedures.
- Let staff know your headwear is religious: Religious headwear may be permitted for visits if it is approved.
- Complete the required screening: You must submit to a search by pat frisk or metal detector.
- Allow removal if needed for the search: In some cases, staff may need you to remove the headwear so it can be searched properly. You will be afforded reasonable privacy during the search.
- Do not refuse the search: Refusing to submit to the search procedure results in the cancellation or denial of the visit.
Practical Tips and Examples
- ✓ Wear slacks, or choose culottes/shorts/skirts that reach at least to your fingertips (or about mid-thigh)
- ✓ Pick a top that covers your shoulders and midriff (avoid tube, tank, halter, and low-cut styles)
- ✓ Wear a bra without underwire
- ✓ Choose shoes that are not flip-flops, thong sandals, or beach footwear
- ✓ Leave heavy jackets and long coats behind, or plan to store them in the available lockers
- ✓ If you are between two outfits, go with the more conservative option to reduce the chance of being denied entry
Last-minute reminder: If your clothing breaks the dress code, you can be denied entry. Double-check skirt/short slits and inseams (less than three inches above the knee) and avoid transparent or fishnet items.
